Maxim Shoots Down Black Crowes
Maxim magazine recently butted heads with American rock band, the Black Crowes, over an unjust attempt at reviewing the bands latest album, "Warpaint" in the magazine's March 2008 issue. According to the Crowes' manager, Pete Angelus, justice was not served on their end of the issue and further states on the Black Crowes' website, “Maxim's actions seem to completely lack journalistic integrity and intentionally mislead their readership."
However, in Maxim's defense to the allegations held against them, they stated that the magazine was only previewing the CD and not reviewing it based off the one single "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution." The magazine does admit their mistake in relation to rating the Crowes' with only giving the band two and a half stars out of five after hearing only one track off the album. Furthermore, Maxim editorial director, James Kaninsky states: "It is Maxim's editorial policy to assign star ratings only to those albums that have been heard in their entirety. Unfortunately, that policy was not followed in the March 2008 issue of our magazine and we apologize to our readers."
Though Maxim magazine has publicly apologized to both the readers and the Black Crowes, Angelus cannot convey his trust and respect back within the magazine. In a statement posted on the bands website he states, "In my opinion, it’s a disgrace to the arts, journalism, critics, the publication itself and the public. What’s next--Maxim's concert reviews of shows they never attended, book reviews of books never read and film reviews of films never seen?”
