The Bonnaroo Press Release: One little letter makes a big difference

Earlier this month when a press release was sent out by the organizers of the annual Bonnaroo Music Festival announcing this year's lineup, many people in the music industry thought the rumors of a Led Zeppelin reunion had been confirmed. However, the release did not say "Led Zeppelin" but rather "Lez Zeppelin," which is definitely not the same band. Lez Zeppelin is an all-female Led Zeppelin tribute band, but was placed relatively high up in the lineup announcement, right after headliners Pearl Jam, Metallica, Jack Johnson, Kanye West and Willie Nelson. If not scrutinized too closely, one might think that the real Led Zeppelin was performing, which is what many newspapers and websites did think (Associated Press, NME Magazine, Chicago Sun-Times).

There had been rumors of Led Zeppelin's U.S. reunion taking place at this year's Bonnaroo Festival, so perhaps the Bonnaroo PR people decided to draw more attention to the festival by listing Lez Zeppelin high on the announcement to make people initially believe that Led Zeppelin was indeed playing. Technically, its not deceitful; Lez Zeppelin is a real band that is confirmed to play the festival, and they WERE listed after bands that Led Zeppelin would have dwarfed in popularity, notoriety, and audience-draw. Even Robert Plant & Alison Krauss is listed before Lez Zeppelin, which should have tipped anyone writing for a music magazine, music section of a newspaper, or music website should have seen from a mile away.
